I have a 78 Bonanza with a newer 2002 mercruiser 302. This weekend it stumbled while starting and locked up. I pulled the spark plugs and shot water out of ALL 8 cylinders. This is the second time this has happened. Both times, after drying and reinstalling the spark plugs the engine fired right up. Ran in the driveway and no other issues. I have no water in the oil and when the boat is running it runs like a DREAM. My theory is the exhaust shutters are either stuck or worn out. I am open to all suggestions.... I do not want to tear this engine apart.

Re: Help!!

if you have water in all 8 cylinders then you probably have a rotted out intake manifold. It's about the only way it can happen.

Re: Help!!

sounds like a hydro-lock, as water cannot compress int he cylinders. Could be a number of things but I would doubt the intake is rotten a 2002 engine.

It could be that the intake gaskets are not torques properly, which can wreak all sorts of havoc

also doubtful that you blew 2 head gaskets. What kind of work have you done or had done on this engine.

are the manifolds and risers new...

the only way to check the shutters is by pulling the exhaust hoses off.

Re: Help!!

Yeah Hydro lock for sure was just trying to figure out how lol. I have a receipt from 2002 for 4200 showing the entire motor was rebuilt. The carb has been finicky thats the only other issue. Just purchased the boat from a friend 2 months ago. He has had it for years the motor has less tha 50 hrs. I was leaning towards intake or shutters. Intake however would only allow water into select cylinders not all right?

Re: Help!!

Check your risers. May have rotted out in the upper aft corners. Best way to check is pull em off turn upside down and poor in water till it is level to the exit port on exhaust side. Do this for all four ports on bottom of riser may not show up if only poored in one port. You cant really see that area by looking in. I had this happen to me. Also bad riser gaskets will cause this. Usually happens at Idle or after the engine is shut down.

What were you doing before you shut it down?

Was this the first time you started it in the water after you just unloaded it from your trailer?

Were you running at WOT on the water and came to a quick stop then shut it down?

Were you going in reverse and then shut it down?

How long was it sitting on the water before you had the "stumble"?

Re: Help!!

I was in the water a while about 3 hours fishing. I went to move spots cranked the key and it caught like it was going to start. The boat stumbled didnt start then i went to crank again and locked up. i have been researching the risers due to the overwhelming response from this AMAZING forum! Risers sound like the culprit, however can the cause the boat not to start when it is cranking properly?

Re: Help!!

Check your risers and manifolds. Water could have leaked through straight into your combustion chambers.

While you were sitting in the water was there big waves lapping on the stern of the boat?

Do you ever watch movies about gladiators?

Have you ever seen a grown man naked?

Have you ever been in a Turkish prison:D:D:D?

Re: Help!!

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR HELP!!!!!!! The issues was the exhaust shutters. The rubber was completely burned out on both sides. We got the engine pulled and are waiting on the new Shutters to get in on order. Once we have them its a matter of slapppig em in and dropping the motor back in.

Re: Help!!

While you are in there you should pull the y pipe off and change the o-ring in there. if it got hot it could leak and you know what it takes to change that $2 part.Good luck Bill

Re: Help!!
