This is now the second attempt out on the water with this engine. 84 johnson 70 hp seahorse.... Starts up fine ,putts around at about 4mph in the water. As soon as u put a load on the engine it boggs down or cuts out if u throttle up!!! I will take any advice ,but will be attempting to clean the carbs out.. I live in boca raton florida ,any good boat mechs would be helpful. I just do not know one ,and i am leary about just opening the phone book for a mech..What really is a pisser is that the engine sounds great!! starts rite up ,but as soon as u put it in gear , it boggs or just doesnt have any power. By cleaning the jets it did make the engine go from just cutting out in gear to puttin at about 4mph. So are the carbs being cleand out heading me in the rite direction? HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Re: help

How did you "clean the jets" ? Sounds like you need to do a complete clean and rebuild on the carbs. Not that hard, you just need to be thorough.

Re: help

Agree with rockyrude. Sounds like you have dirty carbs. Tear them down, clean them out properly (not just the jets). Pull the soft metal plug at the top of the carb and clean out those little passages under there. While you are at it, make sure you have ethanol resistant fuel lines in the motor else you risk gumming up the carbs again as the fuel lines deteriorate.

good luck.

Re: help

Yup, just some bulk fuel line from your favorite auto parts and cut to length. Sometimes taking shortcuts is longer than attacking the problem head on.
