I have a 78 Johnson 25 hp and it is popping out of gear. This only in forward. When I got this it was missing a ball detent. I put this back and still doing it. The gears look good and the clutch dog too.

The answer is easy. The clutch dog and probably also the forward gear are worn out. Very common.

you might be able to flip the dawg and swap your rvs gear for your fwrd.

I do not think you can swap the 2 gears on this model !!!!
