With the purchase of my new boat, I am considering some way to beef up the rear suspension of my Grand Cherokee. A friend of mine turned me on to "Helper Springs"... they are these leaf spring add-ons to help prevent the rear end from sagging. Here is a link to an example:

http://www.mrtruck.net/springs.htm

Has anyone ever used these, and if so, how did they perform?

Sean

Re: Helper Springs

I had considered looking at something like that as well for my truck ee....Not because my boat is too heavy, but because on occasion I will come back from up north with a bed full of firewood. (firewood + boat = lots of load on springs)

With some searching I found these. http://gmocart2.gmotion.com/store/m...uct_Code=12-1500&Category_Code=helper_springs

They seem to be far less expensive. I have yet to buy them, but for $30 I figure its worth a shot to try em this spring.

Re: Helper Springs

I haven't used that exact one but did use another brand on a ford f150 and they worked well for what I was doing at the time. I was constantly overloaded (3/4 ton at all times(tools)) then I would put a load in it and a trailer behind it!

Interesting... have you heard any feedback on those Pony? They are quite a bit less expensive (more in my price range) but I don't want to do the investment of time and moolah if it hasn't worked.

Rwise... what brand/model did you use?

Re: Helper Springs

Sean, your options are springs or air shocks. If you intend to keep the vehicle and there is a loading issue I would go for springs. I had had a leaf added to many of my vehicles by a spring shop at a reasonable price. I do not like "helper" springs and adding a leaf works better.

I would go with air bags. I have a set on my truck and I love it. I can set it to the exact height that I want under any load.

Guys if you want something to help with the load and keep your soft ride when you don't pull a load then get you some Timbrens. I use them on my dodge and would shoot a man that tried to remove them.
Air shocks will give you trouble, add a spring keeps the ride stiff as all get out. Helper springs are useless.
BSA of ohio sell these. web page

Ayuh,.......

I'm with bubbakat on this 1........

Air Shocks/Springs Will Leak.......Or you'll need an Onboard Compressor,... Major Money there.....

Having a leaf added is the Proper Way,..... If your rig is ALWAYS Loaded.........Otherwise,... It's a Buck-Board ride.......

Bolt-on Helper Springs are Totally Useless....... Don't WASTE your Money,.. Or the Time......

Those Hollow Rubber Springs,............... That's the Cat's Meow,.........
You get a Cadillac ride Empty,......
And,... The Heavier you Load,... The Stiffer they Get,..... Progressive Spring Rates,......
Ya Gotta Love it............ ;)

Re: Helper Springs

There may be a problem with Timbren for eeboater. BSA of Ohio doesn't list any for Cherokee.
