A Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Hercules C130 circling the lake. This picture was taken from my front yard yesterday afternoon. Turned the scanner on to learn that a boater was missing after a small boat capsized. Two older men (74 and 48) were rescued clinging to the boat. They were wearing life jackets. A third younger man (21) is missing and was not wearing a PFD. Apparently they were in the water more than 2 hours before being spotted and the young man was unable to hang on that long and slipped under the water. Unconfirmed rumors claim they were all from the same family. Water temps are now 54F so hypothermia sets in quick.

Another sad example of how a PFD could possibly have saved a young mans life. He was a local man with a young family. A memorial has been setup at the boat launch where they set out from and I hope it serves as a stark reminder for everyone to were your PFD.

Remarkable they used a c-130 transport to search for missing boaters on a lake.
Those ships are more equipped for carrying troops and heavy equipment

As long as they are looking !!!!
Tragic event. All the more reason to wear the PFD, especially in colder waters.

Yeh no kidding. That thing is huge and when it circled over the house a few times it was so low I could have probably counted the rivets on the wings.

It was dispatched from CFB Trenton about 100 miles from here. First time in 18 years living here that I've seen an aircraft like that used in search and rescue. The local police helicopter was also in the air as well as police and fire rescue boats. All boating traffic has now been banned from the area while police dive teams search for the body.

The SAR TECH'S yellow buffalo must have been working somewhere else or down for repairs.
Herc's are a good fill in though.

Yep, the USCG uses them for searching. Well adapted for that role too. They can fly over 3,000 miles on load of fuel. Ours have been fitted with extra windows so you have several sets of eyes looking.

Yes, I have had the Canadian Forces Search & Rescue Hercules fly over my house on a training exercise at 100 feet above tree tops.

Did you know, when they are that low, you don't hear them coming??!! Suddenly the sky goes black and every window rattles!!! Yup, needed a quick trip to the bathroom after that!

Same here. It's quite the experience that's for sure.

Re: Here is a sight you don't want to see

Completely off topic but I live near Wright Patterson AFB and there is a contingent of C-5s up there- they also do low level fly-overs and touch and goes. THAT is a loud aircraft but they aren't loud like military fighters- they sound like 5 747s flying over. First time I saw/heard one I was driving past the base and one went over about 500 feet above me- about startled the poop out of me.

Sorry to veer- just saying...

For the size of those 130's they seem to be able to fly pretty slow and stay in the air.I thought that was why they used them for S&R.Can you tell I know nothing about aircraft?
