last week it posted that the 1979 70 hp evenrude would start and run great, then we got to our fishing spot last week and wouldn't start back up again....
theres a fishermans god and its name is
MOTOR GUIDE
brand new battery, had the starter rebuilt(spins the motor like crazy),new soleniod, even new battery cables.........
this morning took her out again, she fired right up and couldn't ask for a better sounding motor, ran great, since all the work i done to her this last week, i felt a little brave and took her about 15 miles up LAKE KEYSTONE,,,
shut her down and drowned some minnows for a hour or two then when the kids started getting hungry decided to quit fishing and go boating,,
GUESS WHAT?????
you got it,, it wouldn't crank fast enough to start it but at least it did crank it for a little bit, then acts like the battery is dead,,
ANY OTHER IDEAS???????
JAKE

Sounds like you got a serious drain on the battery somewhere Jake. With everything shut down, pull the positive post on the battery and see if you get any sparking. Even a little one. Don't know what kind of accessories your running but those are good places to start. Off course you could have gotten a bad battery too. A hydrometer or battery checker may give you some clues.

Re: HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!! HELP PLEASE???

all the accessories have been disconnected from the cranking battery and i put them on the troll batteries, can't figure this one out,if it were a tractor it'd been going in a minute,, too bad,
i bought the boat used, and know it ran well, but i have no idea how many times its been dry started when the previous owner was trying to sell it, do ya think the water pump could cause it to heat up enough to make it crank slow when warm, and crank it real well when it completly cools down?????? i don't know i'm just looking for ideas....
jake

Re: HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!! HELP PLEASE???

i got a 71 rude, 60hp, new battery went dead while boat sitting in garage after 3 days. recharged battery, check'd for battery drain, hasn't happened since. ignition switch sticking maybe, nothing else on the boat....
starter motors can be heat sensitive, the outer case can expand enough to put a choke hold on the armature when hot, shrinks back to normal when cold, thus the no/slow crank hot, normal crank cold..... but be sure to check for battery drain. take test light, disconnect pos. battery cable on battery... put test light clip on batt. post and light tip on cable.... if you have a light.... you have a problem..... hope this helps

Do what Elmondo suggests for checking a battery drain. I don't think the water pump would effect the cranking BUT if you suspect that it has been dry cranked I would definatley change the impeller as it is most likeley damaged by now.
