My brother asked me a question that stumped me - he has a friend bringing him his '96 Regal with twin 5.0 (He thinks, but may be 5.8) Ford F.I. I/O's with the co-venture outdrives. Problem - the left engine just "blew-up" for the 5th time! Been replaced 4 times already. Owner finally got tired of replacing engines and is bringing it to him to try to find the problem.

Anyone ever have a problem like this before? Brother is thinking it may be the fuel pressure regulator. Should be coming into the shop today or tomorrow. Any advice?

BY no means am I an expert, or do I even have aclue about what am talking about, but Iwould check the outdrive. do know for sure, but I guess there could be somethign in the outdrive that could stress the motor, cuase it to overheat?

First you would need to define "blew up". Without knowing what damage the engine had, you cannot determine what the cause is.

Capt Ken,

At this point I am not sure, am anxious myself. Trying to get some ideas as to where to look before project comes in. All I really know is the owner claimed to have REPLACED the engine 4 times already. If we are really talking replacement, I am assuming serious internal damage.

Okay, here is the story, working on it some today - guy just wants it checked, because it isn't sounding right and it is about a year since the last engine was replaced. It had 2 OMC engines installed in 97 (2 months apart) and then 2 more remanufactured ones in the last 2 years.

Only code in computer is telling us it is running a little cold (will check tomorrow to see if the thermostats have been removed) which would retard the timing some. Will also talk with the owner tomorrow to see if it was rings, bearings, or what the original problems were.

It is a 27 foot boat and has 21 pitch props, thinking that it might be lugging down too much - should probably have around 17's???? Just a guess. Warranty is about to run out on the last engine, so that is why he is wanting to know if it is sound or not. Which leaves me to wonder why they engines have gone in the first place.

Boat has obviously been used in the ocean, but seems to be well maintained. The tachs are acurate, so shouldn't be a problem with over revving. No hour gage, so no way of knowing the hours logged, but doesn't look like it is used in a continuous fashion. Anyway, this is a curious boat and know the owner has us thinging hard!
