I don't recall exactly what size it is, just take the plug to a auto parts store or Sears and get an allen wrench to fit it.

A 1/2 inch ratchet works very well too.these plugs are tapered so there is no need to seat them all the way or you can crack the riser or plug. apply a sealant and tighten till snug plus a 1/4 turn.

It turned out to be 9/16. I'm just going to use a bolt with 2 nuts locked together to tighten it. Why they had to change from the old style with the 1/2" square is beyond me.

They changed for the $$.

The Iron pipe plugs are VERY expensive, and are only currently made in any reliable fashion by one company. Hence the order backlog is horrible also, but stocking a three year supply of iron plugs leads to waste (heavy, rusty waste) and most corporate bean counters won't allow a significant parts-bin supply anyway.

These days even brass plugs can be had cheaper than the iron plugs in some sizes.

Steel plugs were abandoned years ago because they rusted through too quickly in the middle, but nowadays most manufacturers are heading back to the steel (or brass when they can charge for it) because of cost.
