hey bondo.........need help with timing

bondo, could you please check your manual (clymer B740) and look at figure 52 on page 75. This looks like the timing tab on my engine. Which mark is TDC? Is TDC in the center of the tab? I set it for the center of the tab (@600rpm's) thinking if anything I might be a little retarded (now be nice!) if anything. I'm assuming it's safer to be retarded than over advanced.

Hi Tony,<br />You've got Mail........<br /><br />The 0* is Not Centered on the tab......<br />Each Point on the tab is 4*........<br />Each Valley is 2* from the Point......<br />The tab shows from 12* Before, to 8* After.......<br /><br />Hope this Helps........... ;) <br />

Thanks bondo (again),<br /><br />The pics are a BIG help. Now I'm not timing it blind. I think right now I'm timed at 2* BTDC. I am going to try this before I change anything. My manual shows 6*BTDC. Does octane have anything to do with where you set the timing? I am using 87 octane. Would I be better off less advanced?

Yes....................<br /><br />It's a Real Pain............<br />But, The Absolute Best Way to time an Engine is at WOT.............<br />You'd need to know the Total Timing,+ have a tape on the balancer, to See it........<br />The Clymer doesn't list it.........<br />I'm just Guessing at 28*/30* Total.......<br /><br />By Ear is like by Vacuum.........<br />You'll end up to Advanced.........
