I've got this one Predator unit that has tripped the 80amp breaker in the unit and in the main panel. I checked for short-to-grounds, pinched/frayed wires, burnt wires, and anything that could possibly be tripping the breaker.

All I found was one side of the cond coil that was totally plugged that looked like a wool blanket. No fins to be seen. I sprayed them off and it hasn't tripped for the last 3 days. It seems like the high pressure cutout would have shut down each stage, but it didn't. The control module shows no error codes at all. This unit is only 3 years old and has had nothing but problems along the way. Gotta say I love the AAON units better. Maybe because they were designed by service techs. They cost more than Yorks, but they take less time to do repairs.

Have you heard about these units tripping vs kicking out on high head pressure?

Re: Hey Rick, gotta York ?

Depends on the load on it. For a package unit, I'm not super impressed with it. If it continues to run in stage one and only trips in the second stage, I would be looking hard at the blocked airflow problem first. It may be borderline, as you said when you cleaned it, it ran for 3 days without problem. It may also be a compressor problem (2nd stage comp). Amp draw would tell the story. If the amps rise fast enough, it will trip the breaker right now, as opposed to the head pressure control shutting her down....Since you are basically dealing with "2" units combined into one, it needs to be diagnosed separately...But to answer you specific question, no, I have not heard of them having a particular problem tripping out...

Re: Hey Rick, gotta York ?

Thanks Rick, I got the condenser coil cleaning crew to work today at that particular store. The day I found both breakers tripped and I sorta cleaned the coils, the amperage draw was 34.6 amps on the highest of the 3 legs. (ooops I forgot to mention that it is a 3 phase 208 volt unit). After cleaning the coils, my amperage was down to 32.8 amps on the same leg. All the other legs were about 2 to 3 amps lower. According to the tech line, those specs are within the limits and considered normal.

The tech said it would be possible for the heat of the day, dirty coil, and heavy load within the store to trip the breakers. However he also said that the high head pressure limits should have tripped and locked that stage out. Yeah, uh huh, that is the way I thought it should be to.

We had some bad t-storms roll through those days that it tripped. That too maybe had something to do with the tripping. At least for now the unit is running good. (Knock on wood) Thanks for the help!
