Thanks for all of your help, it is most appreciated. On my 48 Evinrude (94 model) you said if it is a 4 wire rectifier it is 5 pulse. My rectifier (round silver thing mounted on side opposite of the starter has three yellow wires and one red going to a black tie block. Coming from this black tie block is a harness with black plug with 4 wires, it is not plugged into anything. It this a tachometer hook up?

no<br />its most likly a non used VRO/OMS hook up. take your tach pickup lead from the yellow/gray wire on the terminal strip. it may even have a gray marker on the strip cover.
