You should be ok. I would make sure you are towing it with a vehicle from Wi. As far as I know, all states honor the others' registration requirements for a specified period of time, so if you move there, you have a certain length of time to get it registered. Same as with your car.

Two words of caution: Illinois has a maximum trailer width of 8.0 feet, and so does Michigan.

Also, you still need to comply with the weight and brake laws of the states you travel to or through. Brakes are required on trailers weighing more than 3000# in all midwest states, except Ohio (2000#).

Re: hey rosco

In most states a trailer must be registered in the same state as the tow vehicle in order to provide insurance coverage on the trailer and load. Those states which require separate insurance coverage to be purchased for trailer and load, do not require you to "tie" the registered trailer to a specific vehicle. For example (Massachusetts) - I designate my F150 as a tow vehicle for a specific trailer, indicating registration number. My trailer and its cargo is therfore covered for liability and property damage (to other property, not boat). If were to tow with another vehicle (wifes for instance) that is on the same insurance policy, I am not covered in the event of a mishap for any damage or laibility that the trailer and its cargo incur. There is no additiona charge for designating a tow vehicle, all coverage runs with the insured vehicle. I am told this is reasonably consistent for most states. Any other feedback??

Re: hey rosco

#3000 gross weight is the breakpoint for brakes and registration for a trailer in WI.
It is listed near the bottom of this page.

http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/statepatrol/inspection/faqs-inspection.htm

Also, we don't have to designate a tow vehicle for a trailer. Why would they do this if there is no additional charge to assign a tow vehicle? Here, if it can legally tow it, it is covered by your tow vehicle insurance. It seems that the closer you get to either the east or west coast, that rules-regs-restrictions-and laws get more complicated and intrusive into our lives. JMO, or M2CW.
