Question for you.Just replaced the trim motor with a supposedly good unit.It tilts up and slowly drifts back down to the trim position. Will stay right there.
This the tilt ram? Thanks,Jerry

nah, it's your valve body. trim will hold on as little as 100psi if the motor isn't in gear. Tilt needs 600-1200 depending upon size of engine and length of shaft.

If you have the allen head check valves then try swapping front and rear. Sometimes you can squeeze an extra season or two out of the valve body this way.

So the tilt rams don't go bad? Have twin motors. The stbd.is the one I just worked on.Haven't put it in the water yet.
The port does the same thing.Even under load.It slowly drifts down to the trim position and stays there.I can trim it and it stays put, tilt it out and it comes back to the trim and stops there.Even under load.?????
Saying the trim work but the tilt drifts down.J

Once your prop is pushing enough water then trim will get enough back pressure to start drifting down. the trim is a bigger piston so it takes more fluid to get less movement. You may find trim drift acceptable for a lot longer than tilt.

you can buy the band collar from mercury or make them yourself from 1" wide SS strips. if you make it yourself, then go ahead and beef up the aluminum square to 1/4". the adapter can be bought from NAPA - weatherhead # 1441.

the tilt and trim should be rebuild at around 25-30 years. Mostly because the trim bolts stretch and you are in a world of hurt if one finally snaps. Rebuilding before then is based upon the top debris scraper. It keeps water out. the very instant you see any signs of cracking or tearing then you should rebuild.
