HGE Dry Joint Exhaust Manifolds

Has anybody installed these on a Mercruiser 5.7L? If so, how did you resolve the problem of the upper exhaust manifold fitting being angled directly at the valve cover so that the water line hits the valve cover and won't go on?

Any idea where to get fittings like these (thread on one end but hose barb on the other end) but in 45 degrees? They are 1 inch pipe thread holes.

McMaster Carr they are on the web or any decent plumbing supply house should have them

So, problems so far on installing the HGE Dry Manifolds and Elbows. As described above, the water ports that must be used for full closed cooling need angled connectors (the ports get plugged if not full closed cooling so shouldn't be a problem on raw water cooled systems). It looks like 45 degree fittings will work and I actually found a Mercruiser part number for these (22-865159) that I think will work so ordered those. Unfortunately, the Monitor MFH-5399 only comes with 90 degree and straight fittings. It would have been nice if Monitor included a 45 degree set for areas that are really tight on space.

The other problem with the HGE Dry Joint system so far is that the plug and port boss on the inside of the exhaust manifold hits the valve covers. Here are pictures of how I had to grind them down. I ground them down just enough that a gasket would slide between the plug/boss and the valve cover with the manifold mounted.

My 45 degree fittings came in today and went into the exhaust manifolds fine. I still had to put them in before mounting the manifolds as you can't screw them in without hitting the valve covers if the manifolds are already mounted. It looks like I can angle them enough to now get the hose on for the full closed system.

you're PROBABLY fine, but you might want to take out the plugs and reseal them with teflon tape or pipe dope or your favorite concoction of sealant.... I'd be nervous that the heat from grinding them that much might have burned up any tape or loctite or whatever was on them...

Good point... Thanks, will reseal them.. I will be doing a first start on this new engine on a run stand outside the boat too so that I can look for problems before installation.
