Hi-Fi Speakers: replacing surround kit

I have a set of 15" Realistic speakers, 8 ohm.
The foam edging (think that is what it is) around the cardboard in the front of the speakers has deteriated and crumbled away.
I have learnt they can be repaired with a "Surround Kit".
A repair shop has quoted me Aud$125 each.
They also quoted a new identical speaker at Aud$180+.

Has anybody ever repaired their speakers with same problem?

The other option is change the size of the speakers.
I can buy a new 12" 4 ohm for $50.
What is going to happen if I fit that?

I have just given these speakers to my 14yr old (they were in storage for yrs). He put his small guitar amp to them and gets a much better noise.
If we can make them work for his guitar, then that saves me big bucks and keeps him off my back, until he is old enough to buy his own amp.

Anyone have any advice or experience?
Cheers
Phillip

Thanks for the site Xcusme.
That explains things better.

Have you ever replaced the foam on a speaker....is it as simple as they indicate?

I have this one, (the one on the Right), the Mach 2 with 8 ohms hxxp://www.audiokarma.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=402

Seems they are quite a good speaker so could be worth repairing. I know I paid a lot for them.
Your site showed the Mach 1 parts at US$45, couldn't find the Mach 2.

Thanks a lot
Cheers

I haven't personally replaced the foam on a driver , but it seems like a pretty easy thing to do. As long as the cross-overs are OK and the coils are fine, I personally would give it a go.
