The motor is on a 65 Wellcraft I was wondering about the year of the motor and some basic info about it. Its not been run in about 2years, could you help with some things I can do to get it on the water? I want to be ready when spring hits. I searched and could find what im looking for, kind of a step by step thing to get me on the water. Oh and if its already been discused please let me know what to type in the search box. The model number is a MERCURY 40 5662303 it says thunderbolt ignition on it. Thankyou very much for the help!!!!

1980-83

Replace impeller, overhaul carbs, fresh L/U oil, and fresh gas. Should be good to go.

Get yourself a service manual at the bottom of the page or amazon.com NAPA auto parts or the library.

thanks can I change the oil, fresh gas, replace inpeller and try to crank-it over? to see if it will run, before I rebuild carbs? When I go to the boat place can I give them the model # and they will know what type of oil, lube, and gas (regular not mixed right?)and carb rebuild kits I need. Thankyou for the help Oh I guess you know this is my first boat!! Thanks, Will

Hi Willbarrow81..

Your engine could be model year 1980-1983 according to the serial number you provided...

2 cylinders...

Mix your gas (87 to 89 octane unleaded gas) with oil at a 50 to 1 ratio...

You could try to start it in the yard on the flusher hooked to the garden hose without rebuilding the carbs, but before you actualy use the boat I strongly recomend that you rebuild the carbs... When gasoline mixed with oil evaporates from sitting it leaves deposits of "varnish" and can plug up the small orifices in the carbs possibly causing a "lean" condition from a lack of fuel flow when running your engine at speed.... This "lean" condition can cause serious engine damage... (Damaged pistons, scored cylinders, ect.)

When you go for parts I strongly recomend you go to an authorized Mercury dealership's parts department... They will be your best source to provide the correct parts you need... Just give them the serial number and they'll be able to set ya right up with a water pump kit, gearlube, sparkplugs, carb kits, and anything else you need...
:) Enjoy your Boating experience..

On my chart it says that it is a 1981 model 2 cylinder. It also says that the 1980 and 1981 are the same models, which means all the parts are interchangeable.
