I have a pair of 89 225 evenrudes, after much help from the board I was able solve most of my problems. I now have one motor that idles at 1200 rpm out of the water on muffs. I have disconnected the cables, syncronized the carbs/rebuilt and throtle bodies, checked and confirmed high speed timimg, but cannot get the idle to come down. Any ideas as to what could be the problem.

iDLE SHOULD ONLY BE ADJUSTED W/ BAOT IN WATER, OTHERWISE THERE'S NO BACKPRESSURE. ON THE HOSE IDLE WILL BE WAY HIGHER THAN IN THE WATER. IDLE SHOULD BE ~ 600 TO 650 RPM IN GEAR.

Thats about right with no backpressure. And it's out of Quick Start.

Dhadley, it never came out of quick start. the other motor idled at the same 1200 in quick start then idles at 900 out of quick start. the motor in question had no change, what can I check for? or how do I check "quick start" ?.

If it idles at 900 out of the water it will stall when in the water and put in gear.

Re: HIGH IDLE 89 225 RUDE

my 120 looper idled about 1800 on the flusher but would idle all day at 650 in the water.
check it with a timing light, if quick start is on the ign timing will be about 10*BTDC and 0 to 4*ATDC with it off. if you suspect the switch ground the white/blk wire from the port temp switch and it should drop out of quickstart, if it does not, check the power coil.
the only reliable way to set the idle speed on that motor is in the water, back pressure can make a huge difference.
