high idle outboard

I am looking at a '99 5hp Johnson 2 stroke for trolling use. I noticed that the idle speed rpm's are to be 1200 rpm.

I do not know what other small o/b idle at, but this seemed high to me, (just comparing it to larger motors).

Do most or all small o/b idle this high? Or is this unusual, and would this motor move too fast for trolling on a light 16' alum hull?

Re: high idle outboard

You can set the idle at whatever speed you want as long as the motor runs. Just make sure you blow it out once in a while to keep carbon buildup down. Prop selection can also control trolling speed.

Re: high idle outboard

Does anyone know if the recommended idle rpm is this high for other manufacturers of small 2 cycles? Mercury, Nissan, Tohatsu?

Re: high idle outboard

On my Mercury 8 hp the idle was around 800 rpms. You can always add a trolling plate if it pushes you too fast or do as waterbugtoo said and just adjust the idle down and keep an eye on the carbon buildup.
