High RPM in neutral

Runs fine, however occasionally when shifted back into neutral it revs to 1600-1800 and won't back down. Shut it off, restart and it is back to normal RPM. Since its returns to normal after shutting off it seems like a sensor and not something sticking? Any thoughts?

Could be as simple as a failing or out of adjustment throttle cable. Disconnect and see if it SLIGHTLY preloads the linkage to the idle position. It doesn't take mush on an EFI.

I think Don is on his game.

When you slow the boat you are gently moving the control leaver. A sticky or failing cable may not be returning the throttle arm to the idle position.

When you go to start the engine, the moving of the control lever may be moving the cable to the idle position.

What was the resolution here? Would be nice to have an answer to how the problem was solved!
