Last night i hit a log-amal with my 120 rude with a 17 pitch aluminum prop,

I was cruising down the river at about 30mph, I saw the log or big stick and throttled back but it was to late, it slid under the hull and proceeded towards the prop. I herd two thumps.... thump ..... thump... i emediatly went down to idle and limped back to the dock with a substantial amount of vibration coming from the engine. Upon inspecting the prop and skeg I found the damage. the skeg had no marks in it but the prop did not fair as well. two out of the three blades were destroyed.

1 blade had the tip bent over and the other with a large chunk cut out and some other small bends. my question is have you guys ever hit anything like that with an aluminum prop? did it do any damage to any other components besides the prop? is there anything i should inspect. ie gear case ect ect...

i did put another prop on at home and ran it for about 30 seconds on the muffs, just checking to make sure there was no gear case damage, there was no vibration with the new prop ( out of the water) would i even be able to tell out of the water if there was gear case damage.

can this be fixed?

ps... keep a keen eye for Log-Amals

If it ran fine with the other prop then you are probably OK. That's the nice thing about al props, they bend before the gear case does.

With the motor not running, give the prop a spin and watch the end of the propshaft for wobble. If you don't see any, you're probably okay. That prop looks rebuildable.

That prop looks like it's got another 100,000 miles left in it. Grin

Seriously, I had a 125 Johnny back in the '70's and I just got tired of having alum props fixed. Took little or nothing to trash them out and sometimes they would get wasted the first trip out after the repair. Got a SS and that was the last prop I bought and never had it fixed.

On a smaller engine alum worked fine as you didn't have enough hp to bang things up like you did. Big engines no way.
My opinion? You didn't hurt a thing.

Now if that were a SS and it looked like that then I'd be looking at the lower unit for some potential damage, bent shaft and all.

Be thankful it was aluminum and can be fixed. I dinged mine up yesterday pulling away from a beaching spot. thought I was being really careful too, now one blade has a two inch bite mark out of it!
