hit log...any damage?

Last weekend I hit a partially submerged log with my 2002 Yamaha 115 4 stroke. I noticed that my speedometer was stuck at 32 mph. I ran the boat for approx 20 minutes afterwards and noticed no other problems.

A guy at the marina showed me where I had wood jammed tight in a small pinhole (speedo pickup?) on the leading edge of the lower part of the motor. He also showed me the rubber line that runs from the pinhole inside the lower half to outside the motor.

Between picking it out with a pin and using a compressor to blow air out of the pin hole I was able to clear it out. Now I am starting to worry that I should not have used compressed air as I cannot be 100% that I did not somehow damage the rubber tube that I blew air into. Any thoughts???

dont ever blow air into the tube leading to the speedo. it can damage the speedo. if you must use air, dissconect the pitot tube from the speedo. I usually dissconect it at the lower unit and blow from the tube to the gearcase. . debris in the gearcase pickup is common. ya dont have to hit a log. thjey get clogged with weed and other debris. as far as damage look for any water leakage next time ya run it.

I've had to do the same several times on my 60hp, using a bicycle pump to get out the debris. If the pressure's too high, it will bleed off in some of the joints before damaging the hoses.

Re: hit log...any damage?

thanks guys,

I did disconnect the hose near the top half of the motor and blew air back to the pin-hole.
Rodbolt: you wrote to look for any water leaks. could you be more specific. I guess I am wondering if I could some how get water mixed with the gear lube in the lower half.
thanks again

If you really dinged it hard you could have bent the prop shaft. That will rip up the shaft seals and the lube will leak out. A couple of drops of water in the gear lube is not unusal though. Bit of a judgement call.
