hey guys first post ever long time follower. I have a 96 bayliner capri with a 5.7 mercruiser. I was out boating and let my friend drive . long story short we hit something hard. lower unit is toast and same with prop. Im not sure why the engine doesn't want to start after the collison. it does turn over, just doesn't want to start. any help is greatly appreciated.

Can't help much with the starting issue. Maybe the sudden engine stop threw it's timing off. Unlikely since your prop hub and engine coupler should have done their job and prevented damage upstream in the power train. I knew of a 350/5.7 that's distributor wasn't clamped tight and spun out of time.

I've had two lower gear cases that looked like this. Submerged lock canal wall, and then a wing dam. I got through with a new lower gear case and prop shaft. The prop hubs saved the rest of the internals. If you boat insurance is any good it will pay for the repairs.

Did the dead-man/cutoff switch on the helm control get bumped? That will do the same thing -- you can crank all day, but the engine will never fire.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,........ If it stopped quick, it might be hydro-locked,.....
