Hit stump in lake, now can't twist tiller handle to full throttle

Hi,
I have a 15hp ~1996 yamaha electric start outboard. I was going full out down the lake and hit a stump, motor jumped up and died, checked foot, and stainless prop and all seemed ok. I got it started back up and I can twist the throttle tiller handle all the way to full throttle, but the motor only will run about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Did the little cogs in the bend of the tiller handle jump a few teeth? If so, how do I reset them? Is there a mark on each cog that you need to make sure are lined up, like the marks on a timing chain set of a car motor?
Or, is there something else wrong?

Thanks

Re: Hit stump in lake, now can't twist tiller handle to full throttle

Hi, doc.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I see two possibilities. One is what you suggest, that the "gears" from your throttle handle to the stator and carb jumped a tooth or two.

The other has to do with the linkage that prevents full throttle opening in Neutral and (maybe) Reverse. It may have shifted, thinking you are in one of those gears instead of FWD.

I don't know the Yammy 15s, but most small outboards have both features. Maybe a Yammyspert will add to my suggestions.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the info on the linkage, I'll have to check that out.
