So, I'm out cruising the Chesapeake near the Severn/Magothy river area. Finding out just how brutal my boat is with moderate waves. On my way back in, I went to trim up, and it went for a second, then stopped! Thought that was pretty weird, so I tried to trim down, and it went down fine.

Found out later that I can trim up with the trailer button fine, just not the trim up button. So the actual fuction works, but apparently not the button? Not sure on how it sends the signals back to the actuator, but is it more likely my switch, or wiring, or actuator input?

Is your boat and engine a secret, SW?

Probably the switch.

Your trailer button will raise the trim all th e way up, but not the button. The button will raise your drive to the maximum, safe angle and then stop. From then on, you must use the trailer switch. This feature is to prevent the boater from overtrimming and causing damage to the outdrive.

Oh, sorry. Completely slipped my mind. It's an 88 Sunchaser bowrider, 3.0 Merc, Alpha One drive, and Quicksilver throttle lever. Don't have a clue as to what the trim actuator is.

And if it is the switch, can I get parts for an old Quicksilver throttle lever? Or do I have to buy a whole new one?

Re: Hmm. Just lost my trim up yesterday.

Although it is down the diagnostic chart a little (trim limt switch I think is first thing to check) I bet it is in the handle. You may not even need any parts. I had to reattach the trim wire inside the handle twice with my last boat, exact same symptoms. It had the "Classic" handle which I think they also called a 3000 once. They're a little bit of a pain to get apart and somehow they magically work when you put them back together, but it is pretty easy if you are mechanically inclined. Maybe somebody will post a page from the manual and if you do a search I believe Don S has posted the wiring diagram and diagnostic proceudre somwhere about a month ago or so. Probably in the Merc/Volvo section.

Well, I pulled the handle apart, and the switch looked ok. Wires aren't loose or anything. I have not taken the other side of it apart though(the big box thing). I did find out that if you touch 2 wires together though, you'd activate the trim. :)

And that gives me an idea. I can probably jumper the 2 wires for the trim up and see if they work then. If they do, it's the switch! If not, it's something further down the line.

99% of the time its a problem at the pump bad connection ect

in your case it sounds like a problem with the trin limit switch (its the one on the port side of the drive)

it keeps the trim button from raiseing the drive to high and then the trailer button takes over

there very common to fail because there underwater most of the time

tommays

Re: Hmm. Just lost my trim up yesterday.

My trim quit working week before last. At first it would go down but not up and then it went out completely.

After checking all the fuses and everything else, I looked at the square plug where the wiring from the handle plugs into the wiring harness. It's about 6 inches of wiring with a male connection coming out from behind the handle.

Once I cleaned some corrosion off the connections I plugged it back in and everything worked fine again.

I just had that same problem last week. Happened after a bad rain storm (I had left cover off the boat). Working the switch in the handle, and giving it a shot of WD 40 did the trick.
