I had a chance to attend a IHL hockey game this weekend. After attending I think I will turn in my basketball and football tickets.

I witnessed what I think sport is all about. First I saw a player thrown out of the game. Major misconduct and something else. I didn't see what happened as it was subtle. But when the referee skated over and told him to leave he did the most remarkable thing.  He left. No crying no whinning, just skated over to the exit and left the ice. He didn't attempt to argue with the ref, point his stick at the other players, throw a fit, he took his punishment like a man. Other than that it was a clean, well played game, with lots of action, and a terrific job by the organization bringing the fans into the game with human ice bowling, kiss cam, pee wee hockey, package deals so there were many different groups from around the state there.

As a tragedy, we were in the third row from the glass, and in a fluke situation a woman in the first row right in front of us got really nailed with a puck that came over the glass. She sustained a serious head injury and was bleeding all over the place.

That is where it came together like a movie. When a player on the Milwaukee team saw what happened, he skated over and threw a towel over the glass to those who were helping. Small gesture, big help cuz she was really bleeding from the head. The husband was attending to his wife but the three small children were upset and confused. A fan (mother) showed up, took the children to her seats, people moved to make way, and watched over them while the woman recieved first aid. People who could help did, the others stayed out of the way and did not gauk..

There were little kids (3-5yr olds)playing hockey in the lobby. Anyone offended by this should get a life. Nobody did to the best of my knowledge. When was the last time you went to a sporting event and a third of the crowd was under the age of ten? No drunks anywhere, and it was what I would call good clean entertainment.

If you think pro sports has lost its soul, go to one of these IHL hockey games. :D :D

Makes me want to go to a game!!
Gets so tired of loud people showing who can be the most obnoxious and vulgar.
Having to explain to my kids just what that new term they learned at the game meant and why I never want them to use it.

Minor league sports are great! Gave up on pro baseball till the Curve came to Altoona - great ballpark, great price, family seating with no alcohol or smoking, every seat is a great seat, and the players interact with the fans and have fun doing it!

Hershey Bears and Lexington Thoroughbreds put up good shows in their hockey rinks.

Gotta love the minor leagues!

The huge paychecks aren't there in the Minors to make the players heads swell, which is nice.

I would rather watch College Basketball than ANY professional sport everytime.

March Madness, with the NCAA Basketball tournament, is by far my favorite sporting event.

You can keep the majority of the Pro sports for all I care.

(It was nice to see John Daly win that Golf tournament this weekend though.........made me a little misty eyed).

I agree. Minor league sports are what the pro's used to be.( except for the talent). Controlled egos, cheap tickets and food and parking, most seats are good and for the most part famialy friendly. Get their early, your kids will have a blast.

I have an AHL team (Manchester Monarchs) about 20 miles away. I go to 5-10 games/yr and really enjoy it. I used to go to NHL games regularly, but haven't been to one since the AHL came to town. The players actually interact with the fans and the whole atmosphere is more family orientated. These guys play their butts off, because they know if they get the call-up, they are going to make the league minimum, which is 10X what they make at this level.

The game in it's purest form though is in the NCAA. Those boys tear up the ice. There isn't any clutching and grabbing you see in the pro's. It is constant motion, smooth transitions and unbelievabe action.
