I want to give my holding tank a thorough cleaning. My plan is to pump out, then refill with water and 4 or 5 gallons of bleach. Leave this mixture in the tank for a week then pump out. Will this harm anything (tank, hoses, fitting, etc)? It is a 60 gallon , aluminum tank.

Re: Holding Tank

DONT leave bleach in the tank for a week. You can leave a mixture of 10 or 15 to 1 bleach and water for as long as you like but if you want to give it a shock treatment, only keep the bleach at full strength for 15 minutes or so and then pump it out.I did this and it worked well.Bleach is too strong to leave in at full strength and the fumes are absolute killer. The bleach can dry out the seals in the bowl and flusher so follow it up with fresh water after the shock treatment.Boating mag. has an article this month on this topic and they say to put vinegar in the bowl, tank and lines.I am a bleach guy ,I use it on everything from weed killing to sanitizing my water system and exterminating of ants and many more things.Charlie
