hole in water tube

the last time I had my 71' 50hp apart for the exhuast adapter gasket, I noticed on the water tube from the water pump that there was a small hole in it. I would have fixed it but it looked like it was supposed to be there. like it was drilled from the factory. the only reason I can think of, is that it is there to cool the inner exhuast housing. because if I remember correctly it was pointed at the inner exhuast housing. so now that I have a water pump to install, I was wondering should I fix it or leave it alone?

thanks
Matt

You are correct. It's there to help cool things down a bit to protect the plastic water pump housing.

good to know. thanks Dhadley for your reply. I really wasn't looking forward to tearing it that far down to fix it.
