Holes under power head for wires?

I've been trying to ID this engine I have. So far, it's been a mystery to everyone. Supposed to be a 1989 Johnson 130hp. I'm in the process of hooking up the engine now, and noticed that there are 4 or 5 rather large holes (about 2" diameter) spaced around the shroud under the power head. (is "shroud" the right term?) Anyway, one of the holes has a rubber plug sealing it, and the others are wide open. It seems another hole is for the battery cables and tilt and trim motor harness. About the only normal thing I've seen is the control cable entry opening through the usual place on the starboard side with the rubber seal which jambs in between the shroud and cowling.

Another thing about this motor that makes it a bit different from others I've seen is that there is no quick disconnect for the fuel line. Instead, on the port, front side of the motor, under the "shroud", there are two holes threaded to accept 1/4" npt fittings. Inside, there are two lines leading from these fittings to the vro pump so it's pretty safe to assume that these threaded holes are used for barb fittings to clamp the fuel and oil lines to.

Anyone familiar with this type of engine? Any clue as to what year it may be? Finally, do you think grommets or some other type of rubber seal is available for these holes to protect the wires and keep water out?

Thanks,
Dennis

Hey Dennis
Can you post some numbers off of the motor?
IE: Ser num and or model number?
Then someone can help you get a service manual that would clear up a lot of your questions

Link

Re: Holes under power head for wires?

Hi. Thanks for replying so quickly. The model number is J130TX-CEM and is stamped on the engine. It definitely corresponds to a 1989 Johnson 130hp engine with power trim. I had posted a note a few weeks ago hoping someone could identify the engine, but apparently there's no record of OMC making a 130hp in 1989. I'm wondering if this motor isn't from some chop shop built from a bunch of different parts.

The main purpose of this post, though, is to find out if anyone has seen an engine with these holes. I was at a rather large Johnson dealership yesterday and walked through the entire used boat section. There wasn't a single boat, from quite a range of years, that had these holes. All wires came in through an opening at the front of the cowling. Perhaps it's a limited production engine or perhaps an engine built for export?

I have a Yamaha 30hp which is an export engine and uses a different serial # format, so I know it can happen. Somehow, the engine found its way into the US from who knows where.

I'll look for the serial # and post it here. As soon as I can find the time, I'm also going to create a quick and dirty web site with a lot of pictures of that outboard. The dealer was no help at all; he just kinda shrugged.

Thanks,
Dennis

Re: Holes under power head for wires?

Hi Again. Thanks for your advice and, most of all, your patience. :)

There's been some additional developments since my last post. The motor was repainted completely over the exterior with new decals and under the hood. Unfortunately, whoever painted under the cowling did mask off some things, but some pretty important areas were not masked were covered with a heavy layer of paint. You know, like wire colors and the ID sticker...

As I was looking around the motor with a magnifying glass and bright light, I spotted what was barely visible as the corner of what appeared to be some kind of label. Well, I peeled it off, and with some careful use of paint thinner and a plastic scraper, was able to recover most of the sticker. Here is what it says:

At the top of the sticker is a code: 16AHCXKWB
The name of this code on the left side of the sticker is missing so I don't know what it is.

Then the following two lines:
Ser No. J1148892
Outboard Marine Corporation, Waukegan

I think the serial number is correct. Can anyone decode it?

Also, I found another number. At the rear of the flywheel, stamped on top of the engine and almost completely obscured by the paint was the number:
396632171K 2

Does this mean anything to anyone?

So, from what I read in some of the other discussions, 1988 was the last year OMC made engines with twin power packs. So at this point it's safe to assume that my engine cannot be later than an 88? If that's the case, then the model number J130TX-CEM stamped on top of the motor is bogus?

Thanks again for your help. Nice bunch of folks on these boards. Way different than the newsgroups. ;)

Best Regards,
Dennis
