Holley 6317 Filter?

I am starting to rebuild a Holley 6317 which sits atop of a 1972 Mercruiser 888. I noticed that there was no filter in the housing.
1. Is this normal for a marine application?
2. If not, should I be using the brass filters that mate with Holley 2300?

I can find no information on a filter for a 6317. Seems weird to me.
Thanks in advance,
CT

By spin-on your referring to the fuel water separating canister filter, right? Would it be over kill to add the brass filter in addition to the spin-on? Would the added brass filter inhibit the flow rate that an 888 needs?
