302 Ford onboard/ 4 barrel holley From cold start...Engine starts and runs great with maybe a very slight miss and little smoke then will stall after a while and will not re- start. Have adjusted the mixing screw's with no success. It is an older carb and has no nut on top to access the needle and seat. It looks like some sort of epoxy poured over it. Can't find the screw on side of bowl to see fuel level. Any help appreciated!

On the marine carbs they sealed the external float adjustments to reduce the chance of fuel leaks.
Are you sure it's a fuel problem? If so you may have a bad metering body, Assuming you don't have a normal flooding problem.

Still the last Ford used by Mercruiser was 1977, this carb is AT LEAST 37 years old. It's probably tired and worn out. If you can't adjust it, then it may be best to replace it, and an Edelbrock 1409 would be ideal.... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-1409

The old holley 6317-1 never had a sight glass. The only way to check the float level is to pull it apart and measure it. I also doubt it's a float level problem. If the level was too high or too low, then you could balance that out with the mixture screws, it would be the high speed that would be lean or rich... The problem sounds more like the carb is just old and tired, see above.
