Holley carb flooding

I"m working on a 1980 Ford skidloader that I did an engine swap in. It originally had a 1.4 V4 and I swapped in a 2.8 V6. The 2.8 had the TFI ignition and feedback carb. I swapped the ignition over to duraspark and threw on a 450cfm 4160 holley 4 barrel that I rebuilt last year. It runs rich, currently has size 58 jets in the primaries but I was going to change them out. When I set the floats parralel in the bowl, it wants to flood out at idle. I have to set them all the way down to get it to run. I'm thinking there might be an obstruction in the needle and seat and that I shoud change them out. Anybody have any similiar problems and what was the solution. I'm also thinking 54 for jet size, and feedback on that would be great also.

On the second read the needle tip can be gone if it sat a long time easy to change or float is not floating anymore leaking gas inside.... usually only drop 2 sizes down then test 54 to much

if it runs but it is all wet down the throat and venturis at idle/fast idle, it is most likely a ruptured powervalve. It is a common issue with holleys. all they have to do is backfire once and it ruptures the valve. they can be retrofitted with an anti-rupture kit.

Im pretty sure its not the powervalve as it has never backfired through the carb since I rebuilt it. I wiill probably change needle and seat and try 56 jets and see what happens.

Those holley carbs can be real picky about dirt in the needle and seat put a good fuel filter up close to the carb.

I have two old 600's that went all to hell after I started running pump gas in it.
I personaly believe it was the ethinol in the fuel.

What sort of fuel pressure are you running?

Re: Holley carb flooding

I think i'll change out the needle and seat and jets today. As for fuel pressure I'm running an electric pump that's supposed to put out between 4.5 and 5psi. I havn't checked it yet. I also had this carb on a 302 Ford with factory mechanical pump and it did the same thing so I'm thinking it's not a fuel pressure issue. If needle and seat and jets don't fix it I'll check the fuel pressure and if that's ok I'll change out the power valve.

I cleaned the needle and seats out today. The one was stuck. I also changed out the power valve. The local place didn't have jets in the size I needed so I will have to order some. It ran alot better today after working on it.

assuming stuck open?

Yep.

I'm going to go get jets in the morning then hopefully I'll have this thing done and can get my new boat! I'm trading work on this for a 22' cabin cruiser.

Changed out the 58 jets for 56's and it runs alot better. The plugs are a nice tan color. Just have to finish up some wiring today and this project will be complete, unless of course something else breaks before then
