Holly carb renew question

I've got a '99 volvo penta 5.0 GLPLWTR which according to Holley, has a 2300 series marine carb. I recenly purchased renew kit 703-36 which Holley advised was for the carb based on the stamping.
My question pertains to the pump discharge check ball. During my dissasembly, there was no ball in my carb however the renew kit plus the instructions both come with and list the ball as necessary. My problem is when I install the check ball, then the pump discharge weight, then the pump discharge nozzle and screw, its physically not deep enough for the screw to reach the threads. If you remove the ball, it screws down just fine.
Can someone verify if I need the pump discharge check ball which is number 89 in the schematic?
Thanks

It is necessary. If the kit had several sizes are you sure you have the right check ball? It should ride pretty low in that shaft. The gasket between the screw and the squirter body is also pretty thick, and there are a couple in the kit that look the same. Maybe the wrong gasket would let the screw bottom out.

You said there was not one in it before?

I say it is necessary, the pump discharge will work ok without it. It is there to regulate the flow somewhat and also seal back up so there is no drainback or siphoning, and also to keep fuel from getting drawn thru the squirters at high speed.

Some racers leave it out so fuel WILL get drawn into the stream at high speed because they are needing as much fuel flow as possible and still stay within their racing class mandated carb specs during inspection. A sneaky way to jet up a carb when it needs it.

Re: Holly carb renew question

Maclin, the kit did come with two balls and I tried to smaller of the two and it caused the screw not to reach the threads. The gaskets were paper thin as well so I can't see how they would have prevented it either. And lastly, when I was dissasembling the carb, the discharge weight came out but no ball did unless I missed it. I reinstalled everything and ran it and it seemed to run just fine which is consistent with your above post.
I guess I'll pull the discharge weight back out and see if maybe the one I'm using which came in the kit was longer than the original and I just didn't notice?

BTW, how does a pointed end on the discharge weight sit on top of the check ball? How does that relationship work?

Wait a minute- the picture shows what I have- is this a needle valve which might be an upgrade from the ball and weight? I was thrown off initially because the item which looks like a missle I thought was item #88 from the schematic. Now I'm thinking its a needle valve and replaces the ball?

Ok, figured it out. Posted this so maybe it helps someone else out one day. The schematic that Holley sent with the renew kit sure threw me off- the parts don't match the schematic. I found this picture on a jeep website which shows a needle valve (which Holley sent me) next to a weight and ball (which the schematic I got from Holley shows).
That's why the ball didn't fit WITH the needle valve- its too long.

Re: Holly carb renew question

Sorry for your trouble and glad you got it figured out. The kits have parts to cover a wide range of revisions and that can be confusing. I know sometimes the instructions do not cover every possible part combination and depend a lot on the carb being in "original" condition and it is up to the rebuilder to take notes when disassembling. That type of needle is new to me, I have always had the separate ball. That shows how old the carbs are that I have worked on.

Thanks Maclin for the help. I'm looking forward to 85 degree temps today and splashing the boat for the first time....

The boat ran GREAT! Good hole shot, gets up on plane quickly, idles well too. After a couple of days I'll check the plugs to see if I'm too rich/lean.
