guys dont laugh at me,this may sound completely idiotic,
ARE MY CARBURETORS SUPPOSED TO HAVE COVERS OVER THEM?
MERCURY 115 INLINE 6 1985 MODEL.

i just looked at some pix of inline sixes and it appears that the carbs have covers over them,mine do not they are wide open,no cover of any type

Normally they have black plastic mesh covers to keep out large chunks of junk. You might look up your motor on teh crowleymarine.com parts list to see what I mean.

my mercury 50hp 4 cylinder has 2 carbs with wide open throats. No covers. Not much dust out on the water.

I believe this motor had a black plastic shield that covers the carbs. The primary purpose of this cover is to help keep engine noise down. As stated above there are no air cleaners on outboards to keep dust out.
