I have a free-standing humidifier for winter use, that holds about five gallons of water.
On the really cold days/nights (ten degrees or below) I'll use about 2 1/2 gallons a day. During a winter like this one in Wisconsin, that adds up to a lot of water, particularly when you begin in November and keep it operating until early April.
I use only distilled so as to avoid the mineral deposits that occur when using my tap water (which comes from a well). So far this season I've used about 150 gallons. And it's still January.
In earlier years I bought the water (Wal-Mart and others at around $.80/gallon), but for the past two summers I've actually collected the water from my two basement dehumidifiers, added a little biocide (designed for humidifers) and used that in the following winter. It works fine, but....there I am with over 150 one-gallon jugs of this water cluttering my (finished) basement each fall. I could just give up and buy it, but it's a genuine pain to be hauling ten or twelve gallons two or three times a week.
Has anyone here found an effective means of controlling that mineral build up in a humidifier?
Thanks guys.
