I am looking to add a shade extension to rear of my T-Top on 22' boat.
Has anyone come up with any slick and cheap ways to do this?
At the moment I am thinking of some alum. poles and plastic tarp. This would be something easy to take up and down, used just for shade while diving or fishing.

RBC

Re: home made boat shade ??

12 months ago my wife had an operation that unfortunetly cause lose of hair, out of necessity I built a full length sun shade on the boat (22ft). Once I started I couldn't stop so it ended up being way over engineered but I think the design will suit your needs.

I used high polished 50mm SS 3mm tube with SS handrail cable for bracing. The whole thing takes about 10 minutes to remove (grub screws). I don't see why you couldn't do the same thing with alloy.

web page

Aldo

That looks mighty professional, DR. Looks like you could do a little para sailing with it. :D

What fabric did you use?

The covering is the only part of the project that isn't finished yet, at the moment I have a cheap poly tarp tied on but a nice canvas top is being made as we speak. I've made the frame so that a hard top can be fitted if need be.

The sad part about all this is that I need to sell the boat and buy something smaller - its to big to use as a tender behind the houseboat :(

I also learned on this project how to weld SS, had many failed attempts.

Aldo

All the commercial crabbers around here have shades extended to the stern of their boats. Simple frame setup like you described. Dosn't look too bad, except they use blue plastic tarps from Home Depot. BUT, it keeps them in the shade.

What method/process did you weld with? And how's the new roof coming?

Hope you don't have to downgrade to one of these:

http://www.liteboats.com/dingy.htm

The pipe was only 3mm thick, most of my welding experience has been with 6 to 8 mm mild steel. I began with my MIG (wire to suit SS) set on a low setting and using argon shielding but I was getting warpage and very untidy welds. I soon learnt (learned :p ) that I needed to do more 'tacking' rather than long runs - try and keep the molten temps as low as possible - this worked well for bite but still very untidy appearance. A workshop near me has a 3 phase TIG - perrrfect. They use it constantly 8 hrs a day so I negotiated with them for a couple of lessons and then rented it on a sunday - bingo - perfect welds. I used argon shielding. I wasted a bit of steel doing all this but now I know what has to be done if ever I weld SS again. I have since found out that when I used the mig I should have used an argon/oxygen blend for shielding - live and learn!

One interesting note that I didn't know before this, the black mark left after welding does not polish off, a very nasty (caustic) 'pickling paste' is need to remove the it.

Aldo

Woops, I forgot to add:

I'll know more about the fibreglassing after this weekend - no news at present.

No, definetly not a 10' dingy, no - did I mention no!
Kinda like a 14 or 15ft centre console - alloy maybe. Good for fishing, good for the wifey to handle, good for pulling a skier or biscuit.

Aldo

H*ll yeah! & completely uncontrollable, your life is in the hands of the boat driver. They have been around for about 30 years, originally designed to be towed slowly for small children but young men with no fear discovered that at planning speeds (and above  ) it was a adrenelin rush!! Spent many a night as a teenager in the emergency dept getting pulled/torn muscles tended to. I'll try and find a pic.

Aldo

Aldo, thanks for the reply.
Looks like a really nice unit.
A little over engineered for what I need, I will stick with Aluminum poles.

good luck
RBC

Touch off subject, but those damn blue ones should be outlawed. Puget Sound in the winter looks like a tent city. Green, brown and silver all at least are some sort of natural color and blend in (sold Harbor Frieght)..blue sucks...

Any AC-DC 230/140 stick welder will work with 1/8 SS rod on DC low heat, short arc, keep it moving (no weave) lots of tacks first. Use a Scotchbrite Wheel (Grainger-6 inch) then white rouge and that puppy will look like chrome. Also you might want to look into EMT tubing and connectors...
