Well planing on purchasing a new all. flat boat but not a new motor at this time. I want to put my 48 spl on it. In the future I would like to get a 75 e-tec. But I didn't want to possible drill 2 sets of mounting holes in the new boats transom.

I was thinking of drilling the pattern for the
e-tec and making a jackplate out of 4 pieces of 4" all. angle thick enough to hold the 48.

Or should I just purchase a manual jackplate and use it with the new engine down the road?

And just wondering, I wouldn't think the new 75 would have the same bolt pattern as an '89 48 spl, like a universal mount pattern or something.

I would like to just buy the new boat and motor but I can't swing the $12K at this moment.

Thanks,
Beck

Bolt patterns are the same...
As for set-back, 2, 3/8" peices of 5-1/2" alum channel works great and handles my 200 quite well.

walleyehed,

Thanks for the quick response.

Same bolt pattern great!

I thought for sure I'd gotten bashed for wanting to make my own jackplate. But I'm a little confused, you say 2, 3/8" pieces of 5-1/2" alum. channel?? I was thinking I needed 4 pcs. 2 bolted to boat and 2 bolted to engine and the protruding ends bolt to each other.

I'm talking about angle channel, are you talking C channel? Like 5-1/2 C channel for aprox. 5-1/2 setback? If so that makes sence to me and actually a better idea than mine.

Beck

walleyehed,

Thanks for the quick response.

Sorry I hadn't gotten back quicker, actually I did and thought I hit the "add reply key" but I noticed it never did post. Then the comp went on the blink again and I couldn't access the site again.

Anyway what I had replied with was, I thought I would have gotten bashed for wanting to build a jackplate as to buying one. But I am a true diy and I am sometimes cheap, according to my wife.

I was speaking of (4) pieces of 3" x 3" alum angle 3/8" thick about 6"-8" long 2 bolted to the transom and 2 bolted to the motor then where the overlap bolting them together. Are you talking about C channel? I like that idea alot.

And I was surprised that the 1989 48 spl and a new 75 e-tec would have the same bolt pattern. One other question, I don't suppose that the bolt pattern to cavitation plate distanced is the same on both motors?

Thanks,
Beck

Either will work.

The 2 sided angle stock is more common. Partly because its easier to get, and most manufactureres use it because its just what we're used to seeing, and would probably sell better. Plus, the angle has the ability to give ya a few more inches of lattitude in making your height adjustment.

If you can get the 'C' shaped channel, it would probably be faster, and easier to keep the holes 'square' with since you'd have to drill less of them than putting the angles stock pieces together.

The down side of channel is if you need to play around with your height setting very much. You might run out of room sooner if you don't have long enough piececs of channel to start with.

If pretty you're sure you know where your engine/prop height is going to be ,,, I'd use channel.
See if this comes through...
Notice angle of the top of channel....90degs from the transom, it's 1" higher at the back.
