homemade motor?

i'm working on getting an old kohler vert shaft motor to breathe again. i'm tryin to figure out what to do with it when i'm done and thinking maybe a short shaft mud buddy sort of deal. anyone ever done something like this? any other suggestions would be kool, just not a gokart or buggy.

Welcome! Hang on cause you'll probably get moved over to the non repair section of the iboats forum or something like that. I'm a tinker'er myself although the last thing I tinker'ed on was the "Shaker" inboard/outboard aircooled engine project I did awhile back and I've built three or four air cooled outboards over the years. Sounds like your play'n in the mud, is that correct, if so the mud buddy might be the way to go although I'm not that familiar with them. I did see a program on tv once about how they work, pretty interesting. What else do you have in mind?

Ive seen mud motors that looked like an oar with a motor near the handle and a prop and skeg on the water end.I don't think your verticle shaft motor will work.While you could mount shaft horizontal the carb would be messed up.about 40 years ago we had 3 boxes of disgarded lawnmower blocks mostly virtical shaft used to take a vertical shaft block mount it vertical on a gocart by drilling holes in the base use a horizontal cover and carb setup.The vertical shaft motors had larger valves 3 or 3.5 hp.
How did I get here??
