Homemade Rubber Motor Mount???

Has anyone ever tried this before? I have a 1975 Evinrude 25 and the center rubber mount broke in half a couple of months ago when I was disassembling the engine for rebuild. Now, the motor bounces all over the place and the two lower mounts are taking a beating! This mount looks pretty easy to duplicate, without spending the $100 some people are rediculously asking (I understand it's old, but really?) Anyways, so far I will need a 3/8" bolt I believe, two large washers, and some sort of rubber two compress between the washers, but don't know where to find this material from. Anyone have an idea? I thought of using some Energy Suspension polyurethane sway bar bushings for cars, but the material seems too rigid. Shoot some ideas this way if you have any! Thanks!

A cheap shock absorber has both the rubber bushings and washers

if I understand correctly what you are looking for, check item #180333176418 on ebay completed items
the guy wanted $10 for the whole exhaust housing section with all the mounts on it- he got no bids.

I bought the tiller handle. If the rest of the motor is as nice as the tiller I got, it should be like new.

I will have to take a look at the ebay item mentioned, might be able to use more than just that one part.

As far as the shock absorber goes, that is a good idea and I am now kicking myself because I just changed all the shocks on my truck a few days ago and know exactly what you are talking about!

Re: Homemade Rubber Motor Mount???

Well, I was successful in replicating a mount! I used a micrometer and took it from there.

I used 3/8" threaded rod, shock absorber bushings from the "HELP" aisle found at Advance Auto Parts, a few washers, and two 1/4" square nuts drilled and tapped to 3/8" for fitment into the chassis and engine fittings.

I haven't had a chance to actually run the motor on the water, but so far, the engine is much more rigid than it was without the mount. I ran the motor on some flush ears in the driveway and it feels good as far as vibration and unwanted movement goes. The mount I built isn't fully floating as the OEM one, meaning the studs on either end of the mount aren't truly isolated from each other soley by rubber. My version consists of metal rod going through the entire mount. This may possibly cause vibration through the tiller handle, we'll see. If you ever broke an original mount in half, you know what I mean. Will report how it performs under a load.....
