I have a 16 1/5 foot aluminum powered by an 85 hp O/B (Force)....I am not able to idle the big engine down far enuf to troll for any length of time without carbing up and causing all sorts of issues, besides it shakes and burps and makes too much noise to make it an option (for trolling)....I need to be able to putt around real slow for a couple hours at a time (and quietly)...a friend has offered a used Honda 2hp 2 stroke...air cooled for $600 Canadian.....Will that do the trick for me and is that a fair price...and if it's not too much to ask ...are there better options; around the same $$...

Thanks all...Tim

Re: Honda 2hp air cooled O/B

hi kenora, if you check around i think you could do better than that.
2 hp is pretty small for a kicker on a 16.5 boat.

Try a classified wanted ad in your local paper.

I got a 1993 8hp honda for $400.00 which i use on my 16' K&C .

I would not want any less than that on your size boat.

Good luck !

Honda hade a 2 stroke 2 hp? How old is this thing?

I have a 16.5' alum sc fishing boat, and have been using a 4hp.
It does ok if wind is calm and speed is kept below 2.1 mph. Any faster than that and its just a waste of time.
I am now upgrading to a 9.9hp, or maybe I will use the 15hp that is in my shed.

The larger hp motors have a larger prop, 3 blade instead of two, and can provide more thrust to move and turn the boat, and control it in a cross wind.

Thanks for all the input...and I called Sean and asked...its a 4 stroke about 5 yrs old....he uses it on a square ended canoe.......I believe that you are all correct...I thought it was kinda small but was assured otherwise....I am also trying to keep the weight hanging off the stern to a minimum...thought the 2 hp was the answer......anyone out there in/near Winnipeg (enjoying the blizzard out there right now!)...looking to get rid of a small trolling motor...plz let me know...
Thanks Tim

Re: Honda 2hp air cooled O/B

Your boat may be 20" transom and 15" shaft motors don't work well in that application. I tried it so am speaking from my experience with a short shaft 3hp kicker on a 17'boat with transom for long shafts.

That 2hp Honda is a short shaft. I passed on buying one of those air cooled 2hp x 4stroke Hondas because the cowl is open on the bottom to let air circulate. It lets plenty of water and spray in and I didn't want to deal with that design in salt water.

I have one of those swing up/down trolling motor mounts...kinda looks like a parralellagram (sp ;>) that mounts on the port side of the transom...it slides in/out so you can remove the whole unit...its made of aluminium with a wood piece to mount the o/b on....anyway...I thanked my friend and said I needed a bigger O/B...but I've been down this road before around here.....anything in decent shape, relatively new((ish)..less than 20 yrs old) in the 5-10 hp range is $1000.....aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh.......I bought the boat, motor and trailer for $1300.....and shipping from the US is prohibitively expensive....sorry bout the rant but the local market prices are not reasonable (IMHO)...Tim
