This is a sailboat outboard which has been running great until recently. I'm a total newbie at this, but I checked the oil level and it looks like it's basically dry. Do these motors have an automatic shutoff in case of low oil to preserve themselves from greenhorns like myself?

BTW - great forum!

They could easily incorporate one ,However the self serving little vermons would then not sell parts

Actually ob it's been incorporated very nicely in the form of a oil pressure light that glows when you have pressure and goes out when you don't.This unit is 20 years old .Did mercs four strokes have that feature then?Yamadog?Jonnyrude?Oh thats right. They didn't have 'em either because they only made two strokes.

That's the whole point .A pretty little light could be replaced with say an ignition ground. Then instead of calling it an idiot light we could say call it an idiot ground. then one wouldn't have to pin his hopes of oil pressure to a japanese christmas bulb

You're not understanding what I'm saying.Honda has those features in most of the current model line of motors and has for some time. This gentleman is refering to a motor that is some 20 years old with only the light to go on.Furthermore ,when you allow your auto to run low on oil to the point of turning on the light, will it then limit your power?I've got a teen and know that mine won't.

Was joking a bit on first post .since you defended its design by saying it has been incorporated nicely i simply diagreed.Failsafe designs have been around a lot longer than 20 years.Ijust feel that a boat motor as such should be equipped with failsafe to save engine before it starves itself to death. Threre probably not on autos because if they were to shut engine down in traffic who knows what could happen. As for a boat motor collision isn't an issue on shutdown .And, an oil failed motor can leave you stranded at sea.No hard feelings I hope

No hard feelings at all.Just another good conversation.Failsafe or seized powerhead you will still be dead on the water out there and that can lead to all kinds of things even more deadly than traffic. The bottom line here is check the oil before you go out and carry a quart around if you need it.Pretty simple is'nt it.
