Re: Honda bf15a pops up in reverse
Thanks for the responses........
I got this motor used........supposedly low hours off a barge as an emergency runner. Had alot of stuff in the carb and fuel lines that looked like corn meal. Several cleanings and filter changes and finally got it to run great. But it still had an oil leak, and I can't remember what was wrong with the transom mount, but some parts or something was missing or damaged. I found a used transom mount (not sure if that is what it is called or not), and the seller had an electric start and flywheel and some other pieces so i got the whole lot for a good deal. Changed out the transom mount but it would pop up in reverse, but everything appeared to be there. Motor has sat for over a year but last weekend I got the bug to mess with it. Got it back out, still leaking engine oil, and still popping up in reverse, otherwise runs great. (I also changed the water pump and t-stat when I first got it). The guy who sold me the parts suggested the o-ring between the head and cylinders could be the culprit for the oil leak........so I decided to tear it down. Got the head off and everything looked good, o-ring was intact. Ordered new head gasket, o-ring, valve cover o-ring, starter bolts, starter switch, and a few other minor items.
I have been working for an hour or so every afternoon on the motor getting ready to put the parts back on and decided to pop the flywheel off to add electric start........I think I found my oil leak. There is a drilled locator boss under the flywheel.......I assume to locate that cover in a jig for drilling/tapping other bosses. Anyway, this drilled boss that has no threads or anything in it is pristine clean and is full of clean engine oil. I believe this is a mfg. defect and this engine has always leaked motor oil......probably a casting flaw with a hairline crack that is not visible. I took a tap that would cut some threads in the hole, tapped a few threads, cleaned it up real clean, and filled the hole with jb weld. The threads I tapped were just to secure the jb weld, and I was careful to not go very deep as I believe this comes close to a drilled pressurized engine oil passageway.
I've got the surfaces of the cylinder and head clean as I could with scotch brite until my fingers were sore, and with nothing else I can do right now pulled the engine off the boat to inspect the pop up in reverse problem. One of the large springs was missing. Took a spring off the spare and looks like we are good to go.
Any special tips when putting the head back on? Part of my order was 2 new dowels for the head since I wanted to get the old ones out so I could really clean all the head gasket off properly. Was the scotch brite a good idea? I've got both surfaces real clean but there are still some small dark places. Anything I need to coat the head gasket with or the small o-ring?
Has anyone ever seen an oil leak where I am describing in the boss under the flywheel? Does the jbweld sound like a good fix for that?
Oh, one last thing, motor has never been used in salt water.........other than weathered some, everything is super clean including all the water jackets.
Thanks again!
