A co-worker has an outboard that was given to him and we were trying to ID the motor and determine if it is worth putting some $$$ into to get it running. To make the ID more challanging, the previous owner painted the motor olive drab for duck hunting. We pulled the cowling off and found a sticker stating BF50 and below 1004100. It is a four stroker, turns over nicely and doesn't seem to have any major visual problems other than a coil wire that a mouse has crewed off the insolation. My friend thinks he has had the outboard parked on a stand in his barn for nearly 20 years.
Can anyone offer suggestion how to determine the age of the motor so we can explore if parts (if needed) are even available for this vintage motor? I've brought some vintage OMC outboards back to life and found excellent OMC parts availability but have no experience with Honda outboards. I know the first repair would be the coil wire and a water pump job. We would check the compression before going forward but at this stage we are just trying to figure what we have, how old it is and whether parts are available.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or feedback.
I've tried to upload some photo's of the motor taken by my camera phone but the site won't let me upload the photos claiming many errors or false something.... They are jpeg files and reduced size for email and they open on my computer.
