Same engine but problem #3

This long shaft engine is mounted to transom of sailboat.

When reversing this 4000 displaement 26 foot boat with any amount of throttle above idle the motor will try to pop itself out of the water. Is most annoying as I am already forced to have one hand on gear lever to keep in reverse. This forces me to hold the motor in down position with my other hand and then I have to steer by holding the tiller (on the rudder not the motor) between my legs .. argh!

I have checked the mechanism and when put in down positin it does lock but somehowwhen sudden icrease in throttle in reverse manages to become unlocked.

Any thoughts on cause of this and how to fix it?

Once again the service techs could not reproduce but happened repeatedly when in use on my sailboat.

In fwd gear the motor is flawless. It always starts on second pull and at cruising speed runs fabulously - but in the marina when backing out of my marine slip is a nightmare!

Regards

Mike

I actually have the shop manual for this engine which was very helpful when we removed the lower end to change impeller and shaft but was hoping for a slightly more descriptive reply. FWIW the manual is buried on my workbench now but I will dig it out and give it a look.

" a slightly more descriptive reply".......? What you mean more than one line?:D Do you know how much effort that would take? Typing is very hard work you know....plus we don`t wanna give away all our secrets:eek:

Sorry guys just my cynical and satirical take on things.......although a more serious point is .......if you have the knowledge ....share it;)

I am a rookie mate but it sounds like something is out of adjustment. Perhaps the nut that goes over the shaft that tranfers the movement from your gearlever needs adjusted. Maybe try and get a look what`s happening as it jumps up. There is a figure of measurement for the shift rod in w/m. I think the shift rod is the one that goes from gear lever to lower gear case.
