Honda BF8A laggy acceleration

I posted a few months ago about a (new to me) 1997 Honda 8HP BF8A that I purchased. The carburetor had some issues and after cleaning it out and checking the float was working, the engine runs without spitting fuel out the carb air vent (which was the intial problem I posted about). However, now that the engine is all back together, acceleration is a little laggy. If I slightly choke the engine, it runs up to full throttle quickly, with choke off, it dogs a little. The only adjustment I can find on the carburetor appears to be an idle set screw.

Does anybody have any recommendations for what I could check to adjust mixture or otherwise fix this laggy throttle issue? Thanks!

Re: Honda BF8A laggy acceleration

I have a slightly older BF8A, perhaps 1993-ish. I had a somewhat similar problem (though worse - it'd stall rather than being laggy). I am pretty sure I solved it by unclogging the low speed (pilot) jet. Time will tell, once I run it on the boat rather than in the garbage can.

I used a thin copper wire strand from a bundled wire to carefully poke any gunk out of the thin (I mean really thin) hole down the center, along the axis. Can't hurt to take a look, if you are willing to remove the carb again.
