The positive lug needs to be protected to prevent accidential grounding.
That setup is unsafe- especially near to a gas motor.

Also, you need some sort of fuse or circuit breaker right at the battery. Fortunately they make circuit breakers that attach directly to the positive lug. Otherwise, a short in the cable (for example, where you are running it under the seat) will likely result in fire (or as a minimum arc weld a hole in your boat). By the way, running it under the seat is a good place to develop a short due to sharp edges or burrs on the seat. Not sure what size wire you are using, but it might be on the small side. One other recomendation would be to tie that battery down or even better put it in a battery box and then tie down the battery box. You can get a battery box at Walmart or similar for about ten or twelve dollars. The breaker might be a little pricier but even more critical. You will need to match its rating to what your wire can handle. Also, the lugs you are using to clip the trolling motor on look like steel bolts. If so they will rust and then when you use them they will get VERY hot. (Not desireable given that wooden mounting plate.) Keeping them well greased up with dielectric compond will reduce that risk. The concept of putting the battery under the seat is not all bad, you just need some help with the implementation.

A couple of comments on the battery... If that is not a deep cycle battery, it will die a very quick death. Also, remember to keep that seat cover open whenever you charge it. Charging batteries create hydrogen. Look up the Hindenburg Zepplin, if you want to know the risks associate with hydrogen.
