Hey Tacklewasher, Hope that fire ain't comin' your way!!!! I hope you're making out ok with everything... the area that my grandparents used to take me camping is gone. It's depressing, the picture on the front page of our Victoria paper is downright scary! For those of you that haven't heard, check this out... Kelowna News
I'd like to know why these aren't there. As far as I know they're sitting on Sprout lake still!(?) Martin Mars water bomber

I recognize those planes, they are part of an urban legend of the scuba diver found in the middle of a forrest fire, "scooped" and dumped into a FORREST FIRE  (holy bowel movement, batman!)

and if memory serves ....

visual guy here, remember ...

there was a movie that opened of a guy in a little fishing boat, just fishing away, in a "long shot" extreme telephoto, compresses extreme distance, and down drops the very large and quite impressive Mars super scooper tanker, and begins inhaling thousands of gallons of water, directly towards the boat (neat shot, can still see it despite it being a memory a dozen years old)

I think it was called "Always" ...John Goodman, and some other punk ... effective shot, worth seeing the movie for (it was a good movie, forrest firefighters flick)

the situation reminds me of another movie ...

RUN TACKLEWASHER RUN!!!!

seriously, hope hes ok

:(

Sorry to hear about the fire guys. Tacklewasher, if it's coming your way get out now.

The movie was called Always. John Goodman, Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter. Audrey Hepburn made a cameo appearance as an angel that cuts Richard Dreyfuss' hair. Good Movie.

My prayers are certainly with Tacklewasher and all our northern friends close to the fires. Been on too many forrest fire calls - THEY ARE UGLY!!!! - can turn on you quickly. Nothing worse than watching homes (natures and humans) being destroyed with little ability to get it under control.

Prayers are with all the fire fighters also.

Re: Hope and a prayer for Tacklewasher and neighbors

Thanks guys.

I messed my shorts, pants and the front lawn when I saw the view Friday evening.

I am (still) under 1 hour evacuation alert but I strongly suspect I will not have to evacuate. My trailer is packed up and ready to go and, to be honest, I kinda freaked Friday night and hauled all my stuff to a friends house. But light winds Saturday and Sunday have left me feeling a lot better and I've got everything back home but am still ready to go at any time.

It's been over 70 days without rain and a lightning strike a week ago Saturday set a local park on fire. Then the winds changed and created a class 6 inferno (fires are classed with 6 being the worst).

I have nothing but praise and admiration for the guys fighting this thing. So far 244 homes have been lost, up to 26,000 people were evacuted with another 15,000 on 1 hour alert. Kelowna has a population ~100,00 so a full quarter of our city had to be relocated.

There is a lot of discussion about those bombers but the experts state that they are not the best resource for this fire. I've learned a long time ago not to argue with the people who know how to fight these things and I accept that they are doing everything they can and using all the resources they need to fight this fire. I don't know anything close to enough to second guess them and, given the fact that there has been no loss of life and only 244 homes lost, I think they are doing the right thing.

Nothing is going to stop this or the over 800 fires in our province except rain. We need rain badly. The fire fighters can try to protect the homes, put up fire breaks and try to direct the fire east of town, but the wind can fan this thing in no time and NOTHING short of rain will stop it.

Man, that was a long post.

Oh, and check out www.castanet.net for a good up-to-date site including links to loads of pictures.
