Hope its only the Bottom crap????

2003 searay 240 sundeck with 5.0 MPI duo prop. Had it on mooring for the first time since purchasing it new, Always trailered. Well its been in water for about 3 months and today I went out and took wife and kids tubing and and at less than 1/2 throttle and higher it ran fine but I got no speed and alot of rumbling.. Could all the bottom crap cause this? Its got a decent amount of crap on outdrive and prop now since its been moored. By crap I mean Barnacles and other slime. I guess all that stuff on bottom can cause this? Yes it is painted but the drive ..Which looked like new 3 months ago now looks bad I wanna cry!

Thats where I'd start..............pull it and clean it. Then see what you get.

Of course it can. If you have barnacles on the prop, don't run your boat until you get them removed. They will completely make your prop out of balance and ruin the bearings in your drive.

Did you cover it? Any access to look under the floor? Foam might be wet?

I kinda doubt a 24' boat has foam flotation in it.

always covered..No foam..Guessing its the barnacles...Whats the best way to clean this stuff off? Thats actually how it felt...Rumbles..Like it was outta balance.. I was also told that if the bottom gets dirty with barnacles that it causes the water to get air in it while the boat is moving and the prop is catching alot of bubbles instead of water. Will a pressure washer take this stuff off because it seemed pretty stubborn. What I dont understand is I painted the bottom with the interlux ablative paint..I thought that would solve alot of problems? I guess the fact that I only used the boat 3 times in 3 months doesnt help the problem?

Pull the boat.Power wash it.If you painted the bottom then it shouldnt have anything but slime from not running. In 3 months barnacles will take over anything not painted.Why did you do nothing to your drive?There are lots of ways to stop growth on a drive.
The barnacles when they grow actually grow into the paint and destroy it.You will need to power wash it then scrape and sand and scrap and sand and do it again.
Straight bottom paint will cause corrosion on your drive. Jerry

toilet bowl cleaner works pretty good on bottom scum.

Long Island is pretty BAD for stuff growing as the water gets warm and the stuff growing on you boat is why it is such a good shellfish area


Sliped boats get it worse than ones out on moorings BUt the mooring boats have to be brushed off at least once a month if not more


The local diver works non-stop

I pulled it today..Just slime on the bottom but it was barnacle city on my drive..I spent 4 hrs scraping and scraping.. I pretty much got most off but the awkward spots are tough..Honestly I didnt know there was anything that went on the drive that prevented this...MY BAD THERE. with everything scraped off will those little circles that are left on the drive cause any problems? I dont plan on mooring anymore due to this, I think it will just be trailered from now on.

The circles need to be taken down as the will slow you down.If they are in an area that has water flow: nose cone ,prop cavitation plate.Jerry

Been working my butt of on this..scraping, sanding painting..did I mention cursing and crying? Got most of the actual barnacles off and Im trying to get it bsck to normal..Took it out yesterday and She moved along fine..Now need to get it cosmetically better looking..Got I can of interlux antifouling outdrive spray now..I hope it works. I wish I knew it existed before I barnacled my drive.

FWIW....................There were some threads here a while back about painting an OD with AF type paint..............some issue about corrosion resistance..................covering the zincs............it may be worth a search...........

zincs are being replaced now..they are shot. i wont paint them for sure.I spoke to a few about the interlux OD paint and they say it works well...Im using the one thats made for the outdrive not the hull..I hear thats a problem on drives with the copper and aluminum

I keep my boat moored as well...I'm curious where you live on the island because here on the North Shore, at least in our harbor and the surroundings, I have never even seen a barnacle....anyway, we get alot of sea-grass and sea-urchin type growth on our hulls...

I get in the water with a dive tank and a scrub brush from West Marine once a month to clean the bottom...however, I have heard of alot of people around here, especially those without bottom paint, that just drive their boats, gently mind you, up onto a sandy shore here inside the harbor...it apparently works as far as cleaning alot of the growth off, however I wouldn't recommended it...especially without bottom paint...
