Horsepower comparison between an I/O and an outboard

Is there any kind of rule of thumb as far as how much horsepower is lost because of weight and drive components of an I/O compared to an outboard? Like an outboard with 80 hp is roughly the same as an I/o with 120?
Just trying to weigh all my options with my boat since it will need to have everything updated/replaced eventually.

Thanks.

No easy way to compare it... Even with a 4 stroke and 2 stroke outboards, its hard to make a direct comparison. Once you add the weight of an I/O, all rules of thumb go out the window. Some hulls will handle the extra weight like its not even there, some will be dramatically impacted.

But... i'm curious why. You aren't thinking of converting an I/O to an outboard? People have done it, but I have never seen a conversion that looked even remotely sea worth.

Both are currently rated at the prop so the power will be the same. There are differences in the hull design that make conversion from I/O to outboard or vice versa problematic. Stick with whatever drive system you already have.

From comparing my boat to one that originally came with an outboard, which most of them did, the transom looks and stern of boat look identical one you remove the top panel across the back. I really don't want to convert, for multiple reasons, just wondering. I was just wondering if I came across a 100 horse outboard from my buddy that works fine, has everything to install, and it would actually be substantially more powerful than the 110 I/o it has now, it might make it worth while. Probably need to change transom wood anyways.
