G,Day. I find it odd that outboard manufacturers make so many differant size capacity motors that have the same horsepower. For example. Mercury make a 2 Cyl 40HP that displaces 644cc, they also make a 3Cyl 40HP of 967cc. surely the bigger motor would be a better buy. Yamaha have a 3 cyl 40hp of 698cc and a 2 Cyl 40hp of 703cc? Johnsons old 3 Cyl 70HP (a great motor) was 920cc, smaller than the Merc 40. Yamaha have a 70HP of 849cc and a 75HP of 1140cc. The 4 stroke motors appear to be similar in size throughout the brands. What are the thoughts of others

The whole mess confuses me. :)

Give me more cylinders, and fewer carburators (or efi).
Thats how I ended up with a 3 cylinder single carb 70hp motor.

Oh heck, just give me that one over there, the one with the blue and white stripes. They will match my boat. :)

Whaley - It works the other way too - like the same displacement V4 motors going from 85 to 140 hp.

That just goes to show just how much it Really takes to bump a motor up in horsepower. It's not just changing carb jets after all. ;) There are a lot of factors that go into these. I don't think there's more of a variety of power in any other industry on the planet. You have to appreciate all it takes to keep up with all of that. The manufacturers spend a lot of money on training. They have to considering all the nuances in outboard technology.
