Horsepower rating?

Does anyone know how much horsepower can you put safely to a Bravo 1 drive (only mod. is it has shower)? It originally had a 350 mpi in front of it. He's replaced the 350 with an 830 h.p. engine in his 22 Scarab. A disaster waiting to happen? It goes over 100 mph.

Re: Horsepower rating?

He needs to spend several grand more or he's going to blow it up. He needs a heavier-duty version both for strength and performance. Standard Bravo I's are not really intended for much more than 80mph and 500Hp. Right now the only thing saving him is that it isn't pushing much of a boat (weight-wise). I should also warn that blowing up the drive can lead to the motor grenading when it suddenly jumps to 10,000 RPMs because of no load when something snaps.

A 22' boat with 830Hp behind it is definately a disaster waiting to happen. I assume that motor has a blower on it? I hope he has more sense than dollars. :)

In a Scarab no less... I'm quite certain it wasn't designed to make 100 with any drive.

Coast Guard has a term for boats like that... "statistics"

No blower. It's an aftermarket pro stock motor cammed down for marine use. He is only run it one time at 34 degrees ignition timing and 5500 rpm. The dyno sheet info. says it has 830 h.p. with 40 degrees ignition timing @ 6500 rpm. He has lots of room to 'turn it up'. Which makes me wonder how many rpm a Bravo can run safely?

Re: Horsepower rating?

I should probably add that he races 1/4 mile in pro stock / pro mod and has for 15 years. They're 170 - 180 mph / 1200 + h.p. cars so it's not like he's never gone fast before (thus the connection to the 'extreme' engines). He's wearing a helmet and survival suit too. I'm just worried if his drive 'grenaded' at that speed it would get really ugly in a hurry. I heard tonight that another friend with a 24' welded aluminum 'offshore' has bought the same motor for his boat to replace the 'slow' supercharged 468 (625 h.p.). This other fella' has the same Bravo 1 drive. These guys are buddies of mine so I worry a little... the local waters are going to be a little more dangerous this summer... for a while anyways. I'm not getting in either of them but I can't wait to see 'em go!
